Here is this year's Christmas card for the Natural History Museum. This is a scan from the card itself. The design has been commissioned for their annual review entitled, "The Evolution of the Museum 08/09", featuring the new Darwin Centre (not yet published).
The design follows one continuous line.

The Royal Mail Annual 2009

These tiles depict competitors from ancient Greece performing eight different Olympic events. The designer Adam Giles at Hat-trick came up with the idea to fire them onto tiles.
Competitors were both male and naked, so the illustrations had to be carefully discreet.
My favourite has to be the running in armour event.

The Small Creature

The Small Creature is a book written by Katrice Horsley, National Storytelling Laureate 2012-2014, on the subject of child bereavement for the British Heart Foundation. It has already won the Not for Profit category at the DesignWeek Benchmarks. And also took Best in Show for Hat-trick Design.

Bird was Small Creature's best friend, and they did everything together

Characters

One day Bird disappears and Small Creature is forced on a quest to find him. On his journey he mets and makes new friends.

I tried to put elements of Bird into scenes where Small Creature is trying to find him, hence he can be seen in the rocks and trees, and even in the moon.

BHF wanted a funky, child-friendly and distinctive character for the story. The tactile fabric of felt provided just the right medium for the look of the illustrations.

Scenery designed to play out story

The felt look was carried through to other items including an audio CD, and a string bag for children to keep it all in. Mark Wheatcroft at Hat-Trick did a beautiful job of extending the style across the range.

Art in a Box

This is a new product for The Tate consisting of twenty-one A3 cards, depicting modern works on one side and tasks designed for children on the reverse.

This was a wonderful project - a dream job, and I worked in collaboration with Mark Girvan at Buddy Creative http://www.buddycreative.com/.

Reverse of cards
From references such as the Ladybird book's 'Things to Make" I came up with a simple 'how to' style, with uncluttered and simple images. The aim of the product is, after all, to get kids excited about making and doing things.

Mark Girvan wanted an illustrator who was not style specific to create a look especially for this product.

This Monkey was commissioned as part of a poster campaign during renovation work at Oxford Brookes University. It has since been taken over by the MSc Primate Conservation course there as their identity http://ssl.brookes.ac.uk/primate/.

It was featured on the cover of Design Week in May 2009.

Magpie for Magpie

Collage for Magpie Studio. The idea was to make the bird out of found and stolen things! Background was my daughter's IT folder, the rest was composed of really lovely paper from Grafik magazine. Thanks to Magpie for featuring him on their website; http://www.magpie-studio.com/news.php

The Orangutan Book

Orangutans only exist in the wild on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Each year their numbers diminish as their natural habitat is destroyed and now they are critically endangered.

The Orangutan Book was designed as an activity to highlight the plight of the orangutans to young children. The project required a gentle approach in teaching why we should save these wonderful creatures. The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) has already distributed the Sumatran version and pictured below are some of the school children from Ketambe, Ache with their books. The aim of the project is to promote a positive image of the primate population in Sumatra, whilst having a bit of fun.

An English version of the book can be purchased for £4 at  http://bit.ly/tYx1J - all proceeds go to the cause.
