I was asked to decorate a bat for The Art of Ping Pong 2014 by FiveFootSix, to raise funds for BBC's Children in Need.
The bat arrived as sanded, clean wood. The first thing I did was to varnish it. |
I cut leaf shapes from green paper. |
I made flaps in the leaves so when glued they would grip the inside of the halved ping pong balls. |
I glued the finished ping ping halves onto the collaged bases then stuck them to the bat. |
I decided to add a little poem about what was going on in the tree.
THE BING BONG BIRDS
IN THE PING PONG TREE
THE BING BONG BIRDS IN THE PING PONG
TREE ARE WAITING FOR THE FRUIT TO RIPEN.
WHEN IT DOES,
IT DROPS TO
THE GROUND.
THE BING BONGS
FLY DOWN
TO INSPECT THE FRUIT.
IF THEY ARE SMOOTH
& ROUND THEY WILL COLLECT THEM AND
TIP TAP THEM.
PECK! PECK! GO THE BEAKS OF THE BING BONG BIRDS ON THE PING PONG FRUIT.
BIP BOP!
PIP POP!
THE SOUND THE
FRUIT MAKES.
BIP BOP!
PIP POP!
BIP BOP!
PIP POP!
ONE
AFTER
THE
OTHER.
GNIP GNOP!
A REJECT!
ROLL IT DOWN THE HILL FOR THE GING GONGS.
THEY PREFER THE
GNIP GNOPS.
THE END
(FOR NOW)

And so a one off book was made to tell the story of the birds in the tree.

I used both sides so the two halves of
each ball correspond on each.
