The Small Creature

The Small Creature is a book written by Katrice Horsley, National Storytelling Laureate 2012-2014, on the subject of child bereavement for the British Heart Foundation. It has already won the Not for Profit category at the DesignWeek Benchmarks. And also took Best in Show for Hat-trick Design.

Bird was Small Creature's best friend, and they did everything together

Characters

One day Bird disappears and Small Creature is forced on a quest to find him. On his journey he mets and makes new friends.

I tried to put elements of Bird into scenes where Small Creature is trying to find him, hence he can be seen in the rocks and trees, and even in the moon.

BHF wanted a funky, child-friendly and distinctive character for the story. The tactile fabric of felt provided just the right medium for the look of the illustrations.

Scenery designed to play out story

The felt look was carried through to other items including an audio CD, and a string bag for children to keep it all in. Mark Wheatcroft at Hat-Trick did a beautiful job of extending the style across the range.
